Dilantin is an anticonvulsant prescribed to treat status epilepticus
DILANTIN (extended phenytoin sodium capsules, USP) is a prescription medicine used to treat tonic-clonic (grand mal), complex partial (psychomotor or temporal lobe) seizures, and to prevent and treat seizures that happen during or after brain surgery.
Indications :
• Control of grand mal (tonic-clonic) and psychomotor seizures
• Prevention and treatment of seizures occurring during or following neurosurgery
• Parenteral administration: Control of status epilepticus of the grand mal type
• Unlabeled uses: Antiarrhythmic, particularly in digitalis-induced arrhythmias (IV preparations); treatment of trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux)
Precautions :
If you experience a rash while taking DILANTIN, or any of the symptoms listed below, contact your doctor immediately.
This drug can cause a serious, life-threatening disorder called Stevens-Johnson syndrome and Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) which can be fatal.
It can cause swollen glands (lymph nodes).
It can cause allergic reactions or serious problems, which may affect organs and other parts of your body like the liver or blood cells. You may or may not have a rash with these types of reactions.
This product may cause softening of your bones (osteopenia, osteoporosis, and osteomalacia). This can cause broken bones.
It can cause overgrowth of your gums. Brushing and flossing your teeth and seeing a dentist regularly while taking DILANTIN can help prevent this.
Drug interactions :
Increased pharmacologic effects with chloramphenicol, cimetidine, disulfiram, isoniazid, phenacemide, phenylbutazone, sulfonamides, trimethoprim
• Complex interactions and effects when phenytoin and valproic acid are given together; phenytoin toxicity with apparently normal serum phenytoin levels; decreased plasma levels of valproic acid; breakthrough seizures when the two drugs are given together
• Decreased pharmacologic effects with antineoplastics, diazoxide, folic acid, sucralfate, rifampin, theophylline (applies only to oral hydantoins, absorption of which is decreased)
• Increased pharmacologic effects and toxicity with primidone, oxyphenbutazone, amiodarone, chloramphenicol, fluconazole, isoniazid
• Increased hepatotoxicity with acetaminophen
Storage :
Store at room temperature. Protect from heat, light and moisture. Keep away from reach of children.
